Description
Although W. Lee O’Daniel (1890-1969) never sang or played an instrument, he was one of the most important figures in early western swing. In 1930, the erstwhile flour salesman was the Light Crust Doughboys’ first radio spokesman. Fronting another group, the Hillbilly Boys, O’Daniel successfully ran for Texas governor with a combination of speeches, poetry, and hot string band music. This CD highlights recordings made by both of these groups between 1933 and 1938. Highlights include vocals by Leon Huff, Kitty Williamson (“Texas Rose”) and Leon McAuliffe, plus hot fiddle by Kenneth Pitts & Carroll Hubbard, and steel guitar by Kermit Whalin. Included is a special bonus track: W. Lee O’Daniel’s actual voice in his closing from his weekly radio broadcast. Digital restoration from original 78 RPM recordings by Michael Kieffer. Liner notes and discography by Cary Ginell.
